The Balancing Act: Caring for Your Pool Properly

When I was a child, there was one thing – besides a pony – that I wanted more than anything: a pool. Unfortunately, despite my pleading, begging, and possibly a few temper tantrums I will neither confirm nor deny, my parents held fast on the conviction that we, tragically, were not a “pool house”.  Though, I was lucky enough, in high school, to briefly reap the benefits of having that “pool friend”. Despite the fact that we spend half of our year covered in ice and snow, we Canadians, on average, still hold that deep desire to cut loose, and lounge beside our own personal pool side, free of charge, once summer hits. From May until September (October if we’re really lucky or you’re very brave), having a “Pool Friend” is a pretty great place to be – and if you don’t already have one, maybe it’s time that you became a pool friend yourself.

Great! I’ve convinced you with my clear skills of persuasion that did not work on my parents, and you’ve decided to give into that craving, commit to ensuring that you’re the coolest house on the block – fantastic! Though, before you go any further, let’s make sure that we’re all on the same page here. We all want that satisfaction of the glistening pool just outside of our door, but if we’re not willing to put in the work, or hire someone like D&D Pools, located on First Street in Orangeville, to do it for you, your pool dreams might become pool nightmares pretty quickly.

Don’t worry though, with D&D’s help, we’ve got the number one rule that you need to follow to keep everything in swimming shape. After all, a pool is a fairly big investment; if we’re going to spend that kind of money on something, we want to make sure that it will last to allow us to enjoy it not just for this season, but all the seasons to come.

So, let’s just start with the most basic rule of all – no matter what sort of pool you have, no matter if this is your first year as a pool owner, or twentieth, making sure that your pool is properly maintained is the most important piece of the puzzle.  Just like a vehicle, pool equipment will eventually need attention. Keeping your pool balanced, however, will protect and lengthen the life of the equipment, from the heater, filter and pump to the liner itself. Improperly balanced water can cause scaling, equipment malfunctions and costly repairs – which is why you want to keep it balanced. Unfortunately, this is not a “one tip fixes all” situation, each pool has different factors affecting it, and needs a different sort of attention to balance it, but we promise, it’s not much work for a lot of reward.

For new pool owners, finding the right balance will likely feel daunting. You’re not a chemist! You just wanted to cool off in the backyard on a hot day. Don’t worry; take a calming breath and be reassured by two things. First, D&D Pools does everything that they can to ensure that every one of their customers has all of the information and products that they need to take care of their pool properly. Secondly, though, perhaps more reassuringly – it really isn’t as complicated or daunting as it first appeared.  I can’t lie and say there won’t be a learning curve. There will always be a period in which you will need to experiment, figuring out what works best for you and your pool, but the thing is, once you figure that out the puzzle is solved! You’re going to be “swimming” along from that point just fine.

If you’re looking for guidance or have questions, you can visit D&D’s store, which is open seven days a week; their friendly knowledgeable staff are on hand to assist with any question, and they provide water analysis and advice free of charge.

From here on in, now that you’ve got everything you need to conquer your pool, the rest is a simple matter of calling D&D Pools, and getting started. There’s no wrong time to get a new pool, although if you’ve committed to it and the maintenance that goes with it, sooner is always better!

If you’ve already got a pool, then you know that now’s the perfect time to open up and start swimming. Opening and closing are both services that D&D Pools provides; not to mention, their high-quality techs – some of the best in the region – are available for all manner of assistance, from fixing problems that crop up to replacing equipment. They can do it all. Canada only has a few good ‘pool’ months – so let’s keep our pools balanced and make the most of it!
