Artist Feature: Sharon Barker

I was born in Trenton, Ontario. My parents are Don Guthrie from Guelph, Ontario, and Florence Guthrie from Pine Lake in rural Alberta. I had the privilege of growing up in Alberta until the age of six, when we moved back to Ontario. Since then, I have called this region home, residing in various places near Ariss, along the Grand River, or on Belwood Lake. Throughout my childhood and adolescence, I was immersed in nature – my ultimate playground and source of inspiration.

My artistic journey began with pencil sketches, using shading techniques to bring my images to life. Over the years, exposure to different mediums during my school years encouraged me to experiment more boldly. I explored surrealistic art as a teenager and young adult, always inspired by natural elements. Later, I developed a deep love for watercolour painting, which remains a favourite of mine – often working in smaller formats. I also delved into stained glass and fused glass art, broadening my creative horizons.

In my late fifties, I made a pivotal decision: to fully pursue my passion and see what I am truly capable of. No more excuses -fear would no longer hold me back from following my dreams.

I’ve always been a dreamer, with a profound connection to nature that is woven into my very being. I am mesmerized by its sights, sounds, and textures – the feel of cedar bark under my fingertips, the smoothness of rocks shaped by the elements, the crashing of waves, and the rustling grasses in the wind. The hum of cicadas and bees on hot summer days, alongside the calls of red-winged blackbirds, evoke memories of my grandparents’ farm.

What captivates me most is how sunlight reveals hidden worlds through intricate patterns and details – each one a treasure uncovered only by its gentle kiss. People often tell me I see things differently than others, and I feel compelled to share this lifelong, artful journey. The joy I find in creating is even greater when it’s shared with others.

Currently, I display my artwork at The Local Pieces Gallery in Fergus and showcase smaller pieces at the Elora Centre of the Arts in Elora. You can also explore my work online at sharonbarker.art and follow me on Instagram @sharonbarkerart.
