Hippity, Hoppity, Easter’s On Its Way! - Archived Post

The signs of spring… skipping ropes, budding plants, bunnies, running shoes, and bicycles all ready to make an appearance on this long weekend holiday.

But interesting to note; “Easter is the Christian celebration of the resurrection of Jesus, but the seasonal chocolate eggs and the bunny who delivers them are nowhere to be found in scripture.”

Although there are many theories about how the “Easter Bunny” came to be, the most popular, and somewhat factual theory according to history.com, is based in a German tradition, which made its way to North America sometime around the 18th century:

According to some sources, the Easter bunny first arrived in America in the 1700s with German immigrants who settled in Pennsylvania and transported their tradition of an egg-laying hare called “Osterhase” or “Oschter Haws.” Their children made nests in which this creature could lay its colored eggs. Eventually, the custom spread across the U.S. and the fabled rabbit’s Easter morning deliveries expanded to include chocolate and other types of candy and gifts, while decorated baskets replaced nests. Additionally, children often left out carrots for the bunny in case he got hungry from all his hopping.”

And so here we are in 2018, and not much has changed for one of our most beloved four-legged furry friends. This tradition helps signal the signs of springtime, the time to start enjoying the outdoors, fresh air, and of course the promise of summertime soon to arrive.

This coming long weekend there are so many things in our incredible area to enjoy. A walk around Island Lake in beautiful Orangeville, ON. Taking a drive out to picturesque Fergus and Elora to enjoy a lovely lunch, or take in a brunch in one of the many of the fine restaurants both Dufferin and Wellington County have to offer. Maybe even a trip to the Dufferin or Wellington County museums to absorb the rich history steeped throughout our area.

From our Living Spaces family to yours, Happy Easter, and enjoy this beautiful long weekend!
