When Michael Haunton, Owner and President of Let’s Landscape Together (based in Waterdown, ON) went on vacation with his family 8 years ago, he returned with a new vision and plenty of inspiration. His goal – to recreate the “resort lifestyle” in his own backyard.
“I could not help but think that I could do this better”, says Mike, who set to work on planning and preparation shortly after returning home. “I wanted to experience the feeling of being south, with all of the modern amenities of home. To design and create a space that would recreate the feeling of being on vacation in the comfort of my own backyard”.
Having been in the landscaping industry for more than 40 years, Mike was well equipped to bring his vision to life. Soon enough, what started as a dream of creating a resort in his own backyard would turn into a labour of love that resulted in the ultimate backyard oasis nearly eight years later.
A stunning masterpiece that is an absolute reflection of Mike’s creativity and a testament to his craft, his backyard has everything you could possibly want and then some. The centerpiece of the yard is a stunning 40’ x 40’ irregularly shaped custom built “grotto style” swimming pool. “There seems to be a stigma around landscapers building pools. What people do not realize is that we are experts in design and construction and have the capability to create anything our customers can envision. You do not have to build a standard style pool. What we can do is limited only by your imagination and budget”, says Mike. His pool certainly stands well outside the bounds of “standard”. Featuring an actual swim up tiki bar with custom bar stools that can be removed in the winter, and beautiful hand laid one-of-a-kind flagstone counter tops, it sets the standard for resort style living right in your own backyard. Behind the bar is a full chef’s style kitchen complete with built-in ice maker, grills and side burners, dual sinks and a frost protected floor. And of course, let us not forget the stunning waterfall and elephant rain feature that trickles off the tiki hut and into the pool, providing your senses not only with the visual, but also with the audio soundtrack of your vacation paradise.
An entertainer’s dream, the covered dining area, stone pizza oven and wood firepit offer additional gathering places, and serve to provide a direct line of sight to the custom stage where bands can entertain guests well into the evening. The large cabana and change area feature a covered lounge, as well as shower and washroom facilities for guests. Roll up garage doors with entry to the backyard provide easy access for caterers, as well as additional covered space should the weather decide not to cooperate. Last but certainly not least, the artificial turf area complete with shuffleboard court, oversized stand up chess set and games area provides hours of fun for all.
Quite likely the most stunning backyard I have ever seen, this showstopper is the culmination of many years of hard work, and the absolute definition of “backyard oasis”. “Obviously not everyone has the budget to complete this type of project” says Mike when asked about the scope of this job as it relates to his everyday business. “We can, however, take elements of this and design a project that fits anyone’s expectations. Whatever the size or budget of a project, we treat all our customers the same way”.
With pent up demand due to lockdown restrictions, Mike and his team have found themselves to be extremely busy over the last year. With more and more people spending time at home, families are eager to create an outdoor space that they can enjoy late into the summer and fall. Some of the landscaping trends that are dominating market include:
Covered Pavilions and Roof Structures:
In order to enjoy their outdoor living space more often and later or earlier in the season, people are looking for solutions that offer beauty as well as shade and protection from inclement weather. Retractable awnings and roof structures, pavilions, and covered dining spaces can provide this space, and can even be equipped with ceiling fans, lights and heaters for added appeal and comfort.
Privacy and Greenery:
With more and more people working from home and increased utilization of outdoor spaces, privacy is key. The goal is to create a space that feels private, even when you have neighbors close by. Trees and greenery act as natural barriers and create a calm, inviting environment. Getting creative with privacy structures on decks and patios can transform small spaces.
Bringing Indoors Outdoors:
Outdoor kitchens, pizza ovens, lounging areas and fireplaces, as well as comfortable furniture and outdoor décor can help your home to flow seamlessly from indoors to out. Pandemic restrictions mean more time at home to enjoy family, and a reevaluation of priorities for many. After being cooped up since last March, people are eager to move outside!
With so many people staying at home and foregoing family vacations for “staycations”, the demand for swimming pools has never been greater. Across North America, manufacturers of pool and pool equipment are struggling to keep up with demand. Consumers looking to install an inground pool are often waiting weeks just for a consultation and in some cases, more than a year for installation.
Mike and his crew at Let’s Landscape Together would be more than happy to sit down with you to discuss your landscaping requirements. With the experience and creativity to transform your space, they can design and construct outdoor projects to fit any size or budget. Whatever your own vision of paradise may be, having an experienced landscape consultant to help create and oversee your design can result in a well thought out outdoor space that brings many years of enjoyment to you and your loved ones.
