Once we have put our gardens to bed for yet another year, our focus shifts towards holiday decorating – both indoors and out. At LittleTree Garden Market (off Hwy 6N in Fergus) they offer a number of items and DIY projects to help transform your home and property into a festive, winter wonderland.
Holiday containers are a signature best-seller during the lead up to the holiday season. From early November through to mid-December, the staff at LittleTree are busy creating their signature containers, which evoke a more naturalistic, woodland appearance. These festive containers come in a variety of sizes, and each one is hand created using fresh greens (evergreen boughs) dogwood and willow stems, as well as the more opulent items including birch poles, magnolia, rosehips and Ilex berry stems.
LittleTree also carries premade bundles of their signature items for the customer who wishes to create their own container.
Here are a few helpful tips to assist you:
- Fill your container with a sand/soil mix (gauge weight accordingly)
- Choose your configuration (front facing/360 view)
- On average you will need three bundles of greens to fill your container.
- It is important that you trim each of your boughs and stems before inserting into container.)
- Choose an element to add height and drama for the centre of your container, such as birch poles, willow or dogwood twigs.
- Add finishing embellishments (pine cones, baubles, bows, etc)
- Protect your greens using Wilt Proof.
One of the most important things to remember about your pots, is that you must water your pot until it freezes. This is key to keeping your boughs and greenery fresh and thriving.
LittleTree also offers a custom container service to create one-of-a-kind containers for you. The staff ask that you provide any personal items that you wish to have incorporated into your container. It is imperative to give the required lead time for LittleTree to add these special containers to their busy schedule. Early November is when these requests should be placed by calling 519 843 5394.
LittleTree is also known for their fresh cut Christmas trees, which they creatively display in a manner resembling a miniature forest. Each tree has been unwrapped and is displayed so that families can come in and choose the perfect tree. Each tree also comes with a name tag, which adds an element of childhood whimsy. Trees arrive mid-November and are usually sold out by the second week of December so it is imperative to visit early for the best selection. LittleTree also offers a very limited selection of taller trees (10-12′) but these usually sell out within the first week, so please call to reserve one and give yourself peace of mind.
Your tree will require a fresh cut before placing it in the watering stand. If your tree is being put up the same day as purchase, they offer this service free of charge. Fill the water reservoir once you have placed your tree in the stand, and refill as needed to ensure your tree does not dry out. Do not place your tree near heating vents or by bright, sun-filled windows.
