Planning a Successful Bathroom Renovation

If you are looking to increase the value of your home, renovating your bathroom is one of the best ways to accomplish this. Advance planning and consulting with an expert can prevent you from making common mistakes that can detract from the overall feel and function of your completed project.

Many people begin their renovation by calling local contractors to obtain quotes. However, it is important that you know what you want BEFORE you begin this process. Are you just looking for a quick facelift, or are you leaning towards a major renovation that requires plumbing fixtures being moved or installed? Does your dream bathroom look modern and fresh, or are you drawn to something more traditional with a claw foot tub and ornate accessories? Are there specific amenities that you would like to incorporate, such as heated towel racks, rain shower head, storage solutions or glass shower stall? Start by searching for inspiration! Look online, on Pintrest, and in magazines. Make a list of what is important to you and be prepared when you sit down for your initial consultation with your designer or contractor.

The Plumber’s Wife in Arthur has been helping people design and complete bathroom renovations for over ten years. They offer their services throughout the region, and have a team of experts on hand who have the experience to make your bathroom renovation a success. Paula Coffey and her on-staff designer Stefanie Stroeder, both have the natural artistic ability and desire to make beautiful spaces. They believe in communication and listening to the needs of their clients, but also give their opinion on products and solutions that will work for each project. They love to use their extensive knowledge of the plumbing field and related products to make bathroom renovations less stressful for their clients. They will work with electricians, plumbers and other vendors to minimize errors and time delays, keeping things on budget.

Stefanie recently designed and completed an extensive bathroom renovation for a local couple; working with them to create the spa-like retreat of their dreams. This particular space was custom designed to match the existing bedroom furniture in the adjacent room, and tie into the traditional feel found throughout the rest of the home. The design team and the homeowners wanted something with a neutral backdrop, opting to bring in colour with artwork and accessories which can be easily changed out in the future to give the space a whole new look. Trendy permanent fixtures are harder to replace down the road, so sticking to neutrals can help to avoid pricey updates when you decide you no longer like the black porcelain sunken tub that seemed so right at the time!

This transformation is, hands down, one of the most beautiful bathroom retreats I have ever seen (and I have seen many!). Every piece of this project was well-planned and thought out, with incredible attention to detail. Although pictures could not possibly do it justice, they do show us the endless possibilities that are available, and reflect what a dream bathroom can look like when completed by professionals with expertise in this field.

The space that the design team had to work with was, in this case, fairly large, so they decided to break up the space by adding a “tile carpet” detail with a river rock feel below the tub, which was repeated in the shower with floor and accent tiles. This helped to tie the whole look together and make a larger space seem more cohesive. For added warmth and comfort, they included in-floor heating throughout the bathroom, including the bench seat in the shower. The cold air return, which was located in the shower, was a bit of an eyesore and detracted from the overall look, so the design team had a tile custom cut with vents to give a seamless look and avoid having to rework any existing ductwork. The custom-built vanity and hutch provide ample storage for personal items and reflect the traditional feel of the home, while simultaneously keeping it light and airy, as a bathroom should be. The stunning step-in shower doubles as a steam shower that can be controlled via Bluetooth on your phone, or via the touch screen mounted on the shower wall. And, as if that was not enough, it has dual memory settings which remember each person’s preferences in terms of showering experience!

The piece-de-la-resistance is, of course, the stunning hydrotherapy bath. This state-of-the-art tub improves overall skin health by cleansing, exfoliating, and hydrating the skin with billions of oxygen-rich micro bubbles, and is particularly great for improving skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis.

The spa like retreat featured here is the product of collective planning between the designer/contractor and the homeowners. Major renovations require lots of planning and thought, making it a good idea to obtain expert advice. Whether you opt for a simple facelift to your existing bathroom space, or a complete redesign that requires major construction, doing your research and obtaining the services of pro- fessionals is key. It will serve to make your renovation less stressful and more successful, adding value to your home and resulting in a beautiful bathroom that will be a serene, relaxing space that can be enjoyed for years to come.
