BUSINESS PROFILE: Lloyd Scott Enterprises

The Family Business. It’s a familiar term, yet in this day and age it applies to so few companies doesn’t it? With the surge in large corporate buyouts and children often going off on a career path that does not involve their parents, it is difficult to keep a business in the family hands for more than a generation or two at best. Luckily, Lloyd Scott Enterprises, located in Alma, has beaten the odds. Celebrating their 50th anniversary this year, they are truly a family affair. Started in 1969 by none other than Lloyd Scott himself, his two sons, Jeff and Rick, took over some twenty years ago after having being involved in the business since their youth. Not only that, but the next generation is represented as well, as Jeff’s son works in the refacing business and in addition, Rick’s son-in-law manages the shop. Whether it is Rick, Jeff, or one of their 12 employees (many of whom have been with the company for as long as 15-36 years), you can be sure that you’re getting the expertise that can only come with time and a strong community. Even a team made up of the best players in the world will fail if they did not know how to work with each other. Thankfully, Lloyd Scott Enterprises has never struggled with that – after all they’re family.

Back in 1969, Lloyd Scott Enterprises was just an aluminum siding company operating out of a small building located behind the family home. Originally a farmer, Lloyd often refurbished and designed kitchens in the off season and had been looking for a different direction to take his career. When he heard about an opportunity in the aluminum siding business – while replacing the siding on his own home – he thought that this could be the change he was looking for, and boy has it worked out! Not only has the business expanded in size since then – moving to their current location on 46 Peel St E in 1980, adding an extension in 1999, but they have also expanding their product and service lines. Over the years they have moved from just doing siding, to windows, doors – and even cabinetry! While the first two appear a natural progression, it may seem like a bit of a leap to move from the outside of the house to the inside. To make a long story short, we have a sales person from a little-known cabinet refacing company and Jeff’s own interest in wood-working (and escaping the cold) to thank for that. In the mid-80s they bought Royal City Cabinets, and by 1990 they were designing and manufacturing all new custom kitchen cabinets from their on-site workshop. Whether it’s refacing your existing cabinets to suit your home’s changing look, or building a new kitchen from scratch, you can be certain that you’re getting the best from that workshop, with all of the latest technology and tools at their disposal.

While Rick and Jeff may have simply fallen into their careers – after all, the family business was always there waiting for them – neither of them holds any regrets for following in their father’s footsteps. To be sure, not only do they get to work with their hands, but they enjoy interacting with the people, building relationships with their customers that just do not happen when you’re working with a big-box-store. For Jeff in particular, who works with the customers to design the kitchens, there is a certain kind of satisfaction and pride in knowing that you have built a strong, functional kitchen that suits both the needs and the tastes of the family who will use it. However that feeling doesn’t just stop there with Jeff. While the practical side of designing a kitchen may seem to lend itself better to creativity, Rick also works hard with their clients to ensure that he leaves each and every home with smart, modern windows or doors that meet the highest standards of efficiency in terms of heating and cooling as well as complimenting the home’s style and personality. Their motto, in life and business, is to treat people the way that you want to be treated – and it shows in all the work they do and in the relationships which they build.

While Lloyd Scott Enterprises is a name that many know – the company services homes about an hour away from Alma in any direction – many people are often surprised by just how many different trades that they offer. Occasionally the team will find that even their own customers do not realize that they offer cabinetry work as well as windows, siding and doors. In this day and age there seems to be an assumption that a small business simply cannot be that diverse, but of course we know where Lloyd Scott is concerned, that is not the case. So, if you take nothing else away from this, be sure to remember that Lloyd Scott Enterprises is the place to go for your siding, windows, doors and cabinets. They’ll take care of your home – inside and out – just as well as you would, because, after all, Lloyd Scott is family.
