Bringing It Back to Life

If you have ever taken those first steps to renovate your home then you are more than aware of how it goes. It always starts in a simple way: just growing tired of the same old, same old, you decide that you’ll put a fresh coat of paint on the walls – something to brighten up the place a little. Nothing major, just paint; nice and simple. Except, well… the search for paint leads to the discovery of a wallpaper accent that you simply must have, and then suddenly you’re standing in a room in which none of your furniture fits, wondering how this got away from you so quickly and what on earth you’re going to do about it!

Well, first of all, you’re going to take a step back and take a deep breath. Better? Good. Now you’re going to pick up the phone and call Margaret Pherson at A Touch of Class by Mags – no matter what stage of the home makeover you’re at, whether you’re looking to make a big change or just find the right finishing touches, she has the skill, the passion and the experience to help you. Ideally, we caught you when that first itch began and you can take advantage of her interior and exterior painting as well as wallpapering to brighten up that room, but if that’s already done and it’s your old tired pieces that you’re starting to eye with thoughts of the trash heap – stop! Let Margaret have a go at them instead. You would be surprised at the difference one new piece to tie everything together or even just a new coat of paint can make.

Whether it’s a beloved family heirloom, a piece that you’d rather freshen up than part with, or even a treasure that you just found that you know can be made special, a consultation with Margaret at A Touch of Class will be the first step to making it shine. Through the multi-step process of light sanding, priming, painting and finishing, the little details and intricacies of your piece will begin to shine; often this process brings out aspects that you never realized were hiding there! For those pieces that started out flat and needed to be enhanced a little, Margaret has stencils and plaster which can be used to make a piece pop with a little extra detailing, turning it into something completely new.

If you’re still doubting whether Margaret can really refurbish anything, look no further than the old piano that she has been working on. Normally, a piece such as a piano would be a focal point of the room, something that people design and choose colours around to match, rather than vice versa – but with the ability to paint and brighten it, you can now transform an entire space, taking something that was beloved but perhaps a little worn, and bring it back to life in an entirely new way, regardless of what it is!

Now, if you’re someone who likes to get your hands a little dirty yourself, then you can check out the paint supply at A Touch of Class store on Broadway in Orangeville. The same clay-based paint that Margaret uses for all of her projects can be bought in a variety of colours and size options. It is a great medium to work with because it dries more slowly than most clay-based paints and leaves a smooth finish. For those of you who want to be more hands-on but couldn’t imagine where to start A Touch of Class has an option for you too! Just check out any of Margaret’s painting class options, which come in one-on-one, group or party sizes. All you need to do is bring your piece, and Margaret will supply the rest.  Most group classes are held at the Habitat for Humanity, meaning you can also pick up and purchase a piece right there before the class starts if you don’t have something in mind to bring.

It really only takes one visit to the store to see exactly what it is about Margaret’s pieces that everybody loves. It is so much more than just slapping on a new coat of paint. Each piece, whether it is refurbished for a client or for sale in the store, is a unique finished piece of furniture and décor, just waiting to find its place in the right home. Combine that with the painting, wallpapering, designing and showcasing skills, as well as connections to some of the services, A Touch of Class can’t provide, you will have a complete, beautifully designed and handmade, package. So next time you start renovating your home, be sure to remember to breathe, and give Margaret a call. You really don’t need to look anywhere else.
