A Sweet Little Place
I had never tried a cabbage roll. I’m of Irish decent, love meat, love cabbage, love most foods actually, but for some reason it has taken me 45 years to have an opportunity to enjoy this very popular “comfort food”.
So, when the restaurant feature for this edition’s article was to profile “Son of a Chef”, I began to research what this eatery had to offer, and I knew then that I was going to get my chance… and boy was it worth the wait!
When you walk in, you’re immediately introduced to a lovely display of fresh baked pastries, breads, and pies. While it’s a feast for the eyes, the smell that surrounds you is even better, and if you weren’t hungry before you walked in, you definitely will be!
Located in beautiful downtown Orangeville, ON, Son of a Chef is a sweet little space filled with delicious food, spectacular staff, and a menu unique to the area.
The Son of a Chef story began 7 years ago, when owner/operator Nadia Del Nero was working for a bread wholesaler and had decided to sell their goods at Orangeville’s Farmer’s Market. Nadia had two spots at the market, and their bread (freshly baked of course) was a huge hit. One year later, Nadia decided to open a retail space and dine-in café, featuring a “European-style” menu.
Now celebrating her 5th year in Orangeville, Nadia has developed her eatery into one busy little place! Customers can enjoy hot table items, sandwiches, baked goods, soups, and so much more; all made in-house and served by Nadia and her talented staff. “I have the best staff”, says Nadia. “I’m so lucky to have this team, and I’m very proud of them.” And that same sentiment is not lost on her customers; “Many of our customers have been with me right from the beginning. I’ve gotten to know some of them quite well, and they feel like family to me.”
When it comes to comfort food, Nadia has the chef and the menu to deliver the best of the best.
The hot table is open Monday to Friday, and you can find many delicious offerings such as cabbage rolls, macaroni and cheese (with bacon of course), veal sandwiches, meatballs, quiche, and fresh daily specials which all include soup, available all year long. It’s important to note that other than statutory holidays, Son of a Chef is open 7 days a week.
Looking for something cold? Nadia and team serve up salads, cold meats, egg salad, and just about anything delicious you can imagine, in sandwich form. The sandwiches are served on fresh breads (including focaccia), all baked in-house.
When you’ve finished your delicious lunch or have decided on some take-home for dinner (the café is open until 6:00pm, Tue-Fri), you can also indulge in some of the most decadent pastries, cookies, cakes, and pies for an amazing dessert! In addition to having delicious pies and cakes available daily, Nadia and her team can custom make a cake for you on special order!
In addition to the incredible items you can enjoy at Son of a Chef on a daily basis, Nadia also offers catering for gatherings of up to 50 people. “We’ve done bridal & baby showers, anniversary parties, breakfast meetings, and the customer can always choose from a selection of hot or cold items.”
Or, perhaps a bit of both?
