Ask the Health Expert: pH Balance & Voltage

The term pH stands for “potential of hydrogen” which is a measure of the concentration of hydrogen ions in a solution. It is a measurement of acidity and alkalinity on a scale of 0 to 14 with zero being extremely acidic and fourteen being extremely alkaline and seven is neutral when there is complete balance between acid and alkaline. Our blood needs to be between 7.365 and 7.4 as it needs to be alkaline to nourish our bodies and allow for healthy new cell to form. The alkaline stores in our bodies are water, calcium, magnesium, and potassium and are used to restore the acid alkaline balance when we consume foods that are acidic. There is phosphoric acid in many of our popular soft drinks and it has a pH of 2.8 this being extremely acidic. In order to neutralize this effect, we need to consume thirty-two glasses of water for one glass of pop!

When I was researching this topic, I came across the work of Dr Jerry Tennant M.D. who discovered that in addition to pH measuring acidity and alkalinity pH measures the voltage of the solution as well. Cells must have enough voltage to function properly and to create new cells that are healthy. The body gets well by making new cells and not by correcting damaged cells, so our body is constantly replacing itself. Our bodies grow new retinal elements every two days, new skin grows in six weeks, new liver in eight weeks and new nerve cells in a period of months. Human cells are designed to run at a voltage of negative 20 millivolts which is equivalent to a pH value of 7.35 on the voltage scale. A pH of 0 is positive 414.12 millivolts and a pH of 14 is negative 414.12 millivolts according to the pH Theory.

There are trillions of cells that make up our bodies and they all have basically the same structure, an outside membrane surrounding the contents to control what goes in or comes out of the cell maintaining the electric potential {the energy to do work}. The engine of the cell is the mitochondria which make the energy for the cell to perform its functions. If the system is not working properly i.e., the mitochondria are not producing enough energy, the cells cannot do their work.

Chronic disease is associated with lack of cellular energy. Pharmaceuticals only help with symptoms and have many side effects; however, given time and the right conditions the body can heal itself of many diseases. Increased energy is required to make healthy new cells. Consuming unprocessed foods, leafy green vegetables, alkaline water, sunshine, fresh air, and wind all increase cell energy and increase alkalinity. Our bodies are about 75% water and transfer of voltage occurs in solutions. The pH of the solution indicates if it will donate electrons {alkaline} which is helpful or steal electrons {acidic} which damages the body. Healthy human cells have negative 20 millivolts i.e., a pH of 7.35. When voltage drops below this, we have problems. At  negative 15 millivolts we are tired, at negative 10 millivolts we are sick and at negative 5 millivolts our organs cannot function properly, and problems appear such as chronic pain, decreased oxygen levels and infections. When we move into positive millivolt values our cells cannot function, DNA becomes damaged and cancer can grow. The oxygen in our cells is controlled by the voltage i.e., the Bohr Effect. The loss of energy by either less storage of electrons in cell membranes or less mitochondria making energy is caused by trans fats, hypothyroidism, heavy metals, dental decay, and toxins etc. The question is how can we decrease acidity in our bodies and increase negative voltage? Electrons are moved in three ways. Firstly, by the circulatory system, next through the fiber sheath around our nerves and also by acupuncture.

To decrease acidity, we must be prepared to recognize which foods are detrimental to our health. Sugar is a major problem, not only does it reduce our pH level but can also create an overgrowth of yeast, fungi, pathogenic bacteria, and feed cancer. White flour and baked goods made from refined flours are acid forming as is table salt, so use Celtic salt or Himalayan salt which are an alkalizing form of sodium and contain minerals such as potassium and calcium. Trans fats and processed foods are major offenders so instead look for organic raw vegetables, yams, sweet potatoes, beets and other root crops. Deep breathing too has a beneficial alkalizing effect as do supplements such as chlorella, digestive enzymes, B complex and a good multi vitamin.

The information contained in the book Healing is Voltage by Dr Jerry Tennant M.D. has expanded my insight into the delicate balance within our cells. I have only been able to give a brief overview of the valuable information that is right at the edge of medical science.
